Iconoclasm – Art as a Battleground

A guided tour in the special exhibition

Udstilling skulptur blåt rum

During the guided tour, we delve into the stories behind these works – narratives that also lead to reflections on the power and significance these iconoclastic actions can have on us.

What prompts activists to attack artworks and to topple statues during climate protests and power shifts? With the exhibition Iconoclasm – Art as a Battleground, the Glyptotek tells the story of our tempestuous relationship with art and what compels us to destroy it.

The destruction of images, monuments, and symbols – known as iconoclasm – is not only a contemporary phenomenon but also a historical one.

The exhibition presents damaged works from the Glyptotek’s antiquities collection, supplemented with loans from the British Museum, Musei Vaticani, and others.

Some of these acts of destruction have been motivated by political power shifts and religious upheavals, while others stem from economic and practical reasons. During the guided tour, we delve into the stories behind these works – narratives that also lead to reflections on the power and significance these iconoclastic actions can have on us.
