Classical Summer Concert: Jonathan Swensen: Symphonic Solo Cello

Sunday 28 September 12.00-1.00 pm

Once again, the Classical Summer Concerts are delighted to present a range of world-class musicians, performing amongst the Roman gods and heroes in the Glyptotek’s atmospheric Central Hall.

He has won first prizes in a handful of prestigious international cello competitions, and at only 29 years old, he is already among Denmark's best prospects for a soloist with a world-class career ahead of him. Here, Jonathan Swensen plays music that only requires two things: a cello and a top-class musician.

The cornerstone of the cello's solo repertoire is Bach's six suites. The prelude from the first suite is even one of Bach's most famous pieces of music, which has been used in countless films.

The Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály expands the cello's expressive possibilities by tuning the two low strings down a semitone. And his compatriot György Ligeti wrote his sonata for solo cello in the shadow of the Cold War, when the Soviet-controlled association for Hungarian composers banned the sonata in 1953 as "too modern" – and it was not performed again until 1979.
