Classical Summer Concert: Danish String Quartet: Haydn/Shaw & Sjostakovitj
Sunday 31 August 12.00-1.00 pm

Once again, the Classical Summer Concerts are delighted to present a range of world-class musicians, performing amongst the Roman gods and heroes in the Glyptotek’s atmospheric Central Hall.
Danish String Quartet has been Denmark’s leading string quartet for over 20 years and has formed one of the most sought-after ensembles internationally, with a repertoire that ranges from the great classical quartet literature to arrangements of Nordic folk music to completely new music.
Here they combine music that spans more than 200 years of musical history when they put the Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer Caroline Shaw's 'Entr'acte' together with the movement from a Haydn quartet that originally inspired her for the piece.
It was clearly World War II that was the inspiration for Sjostakovitj when he wrote his third string quartet in 1946. Although he later withdrew them, he gave the five movements titles that describe the phases of a war and ask: "Why?"
