Classical Summer Concert: Absalon String Quartet: Haydn & Schumann
Sunday 10 August 12.00-1.00 pm

Once again, the Classical Summer Concerts are delighted to present a range of world-class musicians, performing amongst the Roman gods and heroes in the Glyptotek’s atmospheric Central Hall.
In the summer of 1842, Schumann wrote three string quartets in just six weeks – his only attempt in the genre – dedicated to his colleague and mentor Mendelssohn, who apparently thought very highly of them. When Schumann declared at one point that he had no idea how he would ever repay Mendelssohn for his great help in his career, he was simply told: "The quartets, Schumann. The quartets!"
Here, the up-and-coming inter-Scandinavian Absalon String Quartet, which won the P2 Chamber Music Competition in 2023, plays Schumann's third string quartet. In addition, they play music by the ancestor of the string quartet, Joseph Haydn: a selection from his last set of quartets, where he more than ever before breaks the framework of the usual sonata form and embarks on new musical adventures.
